For 13 years under a legal arrangement called conservatorship overseen by her father, Britney Spears could not see her two sons without approval or choose her own meals; she was forbidden to drive a car. She was forbidden from seeing anyone without her father's approval.

What is Conservatorship and why Britney was placed under it?

A conservatorship is a legal arrangement where a court appoints a person to manage the personal and financial affairs of a minor or incapacitated person. A conservator may also be responsible for establishing and monitoring the individual's physical care and living arrangements.

A California court placed Britney Spears under conservatorship in 2008 after a series of bizarre incidents, including shaving her head; attacking the paparazzi with an umbrella; locking herself in a room with one of her children to avoid handing them over to the child's father.

If you read this book, you will know why she did the above things and how her father manipulated the legal system in the US to make Britney Spears his personal slave who would perform on stages and generate immense wealth for him. Her own family had treated her like a money-making machine for thirteen years taking advantage of her vulnerability and innocence. She had financially supported her family since she began singing and her family repaid her by treating her in the cruelest way possible.

The book starts with her childhood in Kentwood, Louisiana where she dreams of becoming a pop icon like Madonna. Readers get to see a raw, unfiltered account of her life, from her meteoric rise to stardom as a teenager to the harrowing years under a restrictive conservatorship. Spears' honest portrayal of her family dynamics, including her parents' complex relationship and her grandmother's tragic history, sets the stage for the challenges she would face later in life.

The book delves into the darkest chapters of her life – the public scrutiny, the paparazzi hounding, the relentless pressure to be perfect. Spears doesn't shy away from the toll it took on her mental and emotional well-being, detailing struggles with anxiety, depression, and the constant fear of being silenced. Her vulnerability is both heartbreaking and inspiring, reminding us that even the brightest stars can face unimaginable darkness.

One of the book's most impactful aspects is its unflinching examination of the conservatorship system. Spears provides a nuanced and heartbreaking account of the restrictions placed on her life, the financial control she faced, and the constant surveillance under which she lived. Her story sheds light on the systemic flaws and ethical questions surrounding conservatorships, sparking a much-needed conversation about individual rights and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals.

Britney Spears emphasizes many times in the book that she finds the Conservatorship quite ironic because according to it, she was not capable of looking after herself, while at the same time, the same conservatorship system decides that she was capable enough to tour and perform on world stages.  At the end of the book, Britney Spears feels relieved that her father is out of her life while cherishing her regained freedom.

This book is a powerful and necessary read, not just for fans of Britney Spears, but for anyone who has ever felt silenced, controlled, or misunderstood.

  1. This book is an eye opener for various things. Specially, all the glamour which we see is not the truth behind every celebrity !
